sharepoint project template or wspbuilder

Jun 8, 2007 at 12:20 PM

This is regarding this tool i.e.wspbuilder
I have found one more tool on codeplex called sharepoint visual studio project template (http://www.codeplex.com/sptemplateland)
which do similiar things as wspbuilder. Although sharepoint vs project template is a template ,but the end result of both tools is same.
What is your recommmendation about which one to use in which case

The http://www.codeplex.com/sptemplateland is based on vb script and do not fully support the WSP Schema. The WSPBuilder is a C# app. that uses the same idea of using folders to build a wsp fil. WSPBuilder implements a lot of logic to handle the creation of the WSP file, like autogeneration of Policy PermissionSets if the dll's go's into the WebApplication and not the GAC. However there is no Visual Studio templates for WSPBuilder, but you still add the wspbuilder.exe to the postbuild in your VS project.

Thanks for your reply. So i would use wspbuilder for ease and taking future requirements into
account.
Have you ever has a look to sharepoint solution installer(http://blog.mondosoft.com/ontolica/archive/2007/03/14/Generic-SharePoint-2007-Solution-Installer.aspx) or Solution Pack Generator (published in codeplex ).
I am bit confused as whether these products complements or supplements wspbuilder.
what should be used first and the recommended way the doing this whole thing.
any guidance in this would be of great help

First of all.
Solution Pack Generator and WSPBuilder make the solutions.
"Mondosoft Solution Installer" install solutions.

The "Mondosoft Solution Installer" is a very good complement to WSPBuilder, because it can install the solutions made by WSPBuilder into SharePoint. I use the WSPBuilder and Mondosoft installer together myself every day. Solution Pack Generator can also make Solutions like WSPBuilder. The Generator is a Winform app. where the WSPBuilder is a console application. Therefore if you are manually making a solution the Generator may be more easy to start with. But if you are using a build script (like NAnt) or Visual studio then the WSPBuilder is the app. to use.
